Hoxton Beach has been running the café at Clissold Leisure Centre since October 2008. This was eight months after the £45 million building’s second opening. Although the project had been dogged by trouble and overspend this centre is now one of the busiest and most successful in London. We have created what a rival leisure centre operator was kind enough to describe as the UK’s best leisure centre café and we have done this by making full use of a well equipped kitchen while breaking with the somewhat bleak look of the place we inherited. The public areas have drawn on the experience of locally based decorative artist Cressida Bell and the overall look, with painted columns and ultramarine blue ceiling is inspired by French romanesque art as restored in the 19th century. We commissioned communal tables from Lassco made with recycled floorboards. Before lockdown the café was very busy and we had complaints over queueing. With the reopening we will concentrate on quick service, with a new three-group coffee machine and card only payments.
